Burung perkutut memiliki nama latin Geopelia Striata yang secara harfiah berarti merpati lurik. Bangsa perkutut (Geopelia Striata) sendiri terdiri dari beberapa jenis yaitu:

8. Perkutut Hawaii 

Di Hawaii ternyata banyak terdapat burung perkutut yang hidup bebas berkeliaran di hutan dan bahkan di kota-kota dekat dengan penduduk, seperti burung gereja saja yang ada di kota-kota di Indonesia. Perkutut Hawaii ini disebut sebagai Zebra Dove dan aslinya berasal dari tanah Jawa juga yang dibawa oleh orang-orang Jawa yang pergi ke Hawaii.

9. Perkutut Bangkok 

Dikenal di masyarakat kita kalau perkutut Bangkok bersuara besar dan ngebass. Sementara perkutut yang biasa ditangkap dari hutan disebut perkutut lokal bersuara kecil. Hal ini hanya salah kaprah saja, salah tetapi dianggap benar, karena perkutut Bangkok pun asalnya juga dari tanah Jawa yang sudah dikembangbiakkan dan diambil keturunannya yang bersuara besar dan banyak yang di ekspor ke Indonesia lagi. Dan saat ini hampir seluruh penghuni kandang ternak di Indonesia adalah keturunan dari perkutut yang didatangkan dari Bangkok. Trend terakhir 2008-2009 kembali perkutut dari Bangkok dan Thailand Selatan yang bersuara besar dan berujung panjang banyak didatangkan ke Indonesia sebagai indukan. Kerabat Dekat PerkututKerabat terdekat perkutut ada dua jenis yaitu bangsa Geopelia Humeralis atau perkutut raksasa karena memang ukuran badannya sangat besar hampir dua kali lipat dibanding ukuran badan perkutut biasa. Berasal dari Australia bagian Utara. Dikenal juga sebagai Barred Ground Dove dikalangan internasional.Kerabat berikutnya banyak dipelihara di Indonesia yaitu Geopelia Cuneata atau lebih dikenal dengan nama Diamond Dove. Ukuran tubuhnya hanya setengah dari ukuran tubuh perkutut biasa. Dan di Indonesia banyak dipakai sebagai induk asuh untuk meloloh piyik perkutut untuk mempercepat proses produksi piyik perkutut.

Semua jenis perkutut di atas umumnya disebut sebagai perkutut lokal, sedangkan yang dimaksud perkutut Bangkok (Thailand)  adalah perkutut belang (G.S. Striata) yang juga berasal dari Indonesia tepatnya di Pulau Jawa. Dan sudah mulai diternakkan di Thailand sejak  50 tahun yang lalu. Secara fisik perkutut lokal dan bangkok hampir sama. Secara fisik hanya dapat dibedakan oleh orang yang sudah biasa melihatnya, yaitu dengan melihat matanya di mana mata perkutut lokal mempunyai lingkaran mata warna putih lebih besar daripada mata perkutut bangkok. 

Cara yang paling mudah adalah dengan mendengarkan suaranya. Perkutut lokal mempunyai suara yang ringan dan datar serta tempo iramanya cepat, sedangkan suara perkutut bangkok lebih besar (nge-bass). 

Perkutut lokal terutama yang merupakan tangkapan dari alam, makin hari makin berkurang peminatnya selain oleh karena mutu suaranya yang kurang baik juga disebabkan bakalan (anak/remaja) perkutut lokal untuk menjadi rajin manggung memerlukan waktu antara 2 hingga 4 tahun, sedangkan perkutut bangkok usia 7 bulan sudah bocor jika perawatan, makanan dan keturunannya cukup baik.

Perkutut Jantan dan Betina
Kelamin perkutut dapat dibedakan dengan cara meraba supit (tulang bagian perut bawah dekat dubur). Kalau supitnya dekat sekali, keras dan hampir rapat umumnya berkelamin jantan, sedangkan kalau renggang dan lunak umumnya berkelamin betina.
